binder

Arriving in a new country with new faces, new appliances, a new language, a new currency can all be overwhelming without the added challenge of having lived as a refugee for the past several years. There is alot of new information for a newcomer to absorb.

We strongly encourage sponsorship groups to prepare a binder to give to the family soon after arrival. The family will be able to review information, pictures and maps at anytime, reinforcing anything sponsors have previously shared.

The binder should include:

  • a photo of each group member with their phone number, email, focus area, times of availability
  • list of emergency numbers, 911 & protocol; nurses hotline; medical clinic; doctor; dentist; school
  • list of settlement numbers: local settlement agencies; SAH representative
  • monthly budget
  • safety orientation of their new home
  • orientation of appliances
  • public transportation orientation

Once housing has been arranged, add:

  • their own address & phone number
  • map of the neighbourhood with stores, banks, schools, etc identified
  • map with hospital, walk-in clinic & pharmacy identified

Download the following overview document intended to help you and your sponsorship group prepare for the arrival. It covers airport arrival, emotional considerations, the first day, and confidentiality and privacy.
